The Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora (aka the Chora Church) is one of the most beautiful surviving examples of a Byzantine church. Now in Istanbul, Turkey, the inside of the building is covered with fine mosaics and frescoes. Originally built in the early 5th century as part of a monastery complex outside the walls of the city of Constantinople (hence the name "chora" meaning countryside), the church’s full name was the "Church of the Holy Saviour in the Country." When Theodosius II built his walls in 413–414, the church became incorporated within the city. This is a very recent picture of the current state of the fresco of the Resurrection or "Anastasis" sometimes called "The Harrowing of Hades" taken this spring (2014) during a pilgrimage to Constantinople.
